Magellano Tech launches an AI design programme for humanoid and quadruped robotics
The AI Governance Committee will review, at its next meeting, a proposal for a programme dedicated to integrating AI systems into next-generation robots. The company is opening applications to engineers and young talent interested in contributing or training.
In recent years, Magellano Tech has developed and brought into production artificial intelligence systems for public and private organisations. These include conversational assistants, document platforms that answer questions by citing the exact source, and solutions for managing healthcare services. They are systems that operate through a digital interface.
The next step we intend to take concerns artificial intelligence applied to physical machines. At the next meeting of the AI Governance Committee, we will submit a proposal to launch a structured programme to design AI systems to be integrated into next-generation humanoid and quadruped robots.
The context
Hardware platforms for advanced robotics have reached significant maturity. Humanoids with stable locomotion are now available, as are quadrupeds that can be deployed to inspect construction sites, tunnels and industrial plants. There are also manipulators equipped with high-precision tactile sensors.
The gap lies mainly at the software level. To operate in real-world settings, a robot must understand natural language instructions, interpret the environment it moves in and adapt its behaviour safely. In Europe, it must also comply with a demanding regulatory framework, which includes the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act), the GDPR, cybersecurity legislation and machinery safety rules.
Areas of design
The proposed programme is structured around three lines of work.
The first concerns conversational and decision-making intelligence. We want systems capable of understanding a request, translating it into a sequence of actions and carrying it out, while always keeping the process behind each decision traceable and explainable.
The second concerns context awareness. This involves integrating computer vision, sensor data and environment mapping so that the robot recognises the operational context it is in and behaves accordingly. The target settings are healthcare facilities, logistics, infrastructure and security.
The third is European compliance by design. Many of the most advanced robotic platforms are manufactured outside the European Union. We intend to develop the software layer that enables their use in Europe in full compliance with current legislation, with particular attention to data protection, cybersecurity and human oversight.
The foundations we are building on
Magellano Tech operates with an artificial intelligence management system certified to UNI CEI ISO/IEC 42001:2024 and an information security management system certified to ISO/IEC 27001:2022. Our AI platforms are delivered on cloud infrastructure qualified by the Italian National Cybersecurity Agency, with data stored in Italy.
Every new artificial intelligence project undertaken by the company is subject to prior assessment by the AI Governance Committee. This principle becomes even more important when AI controls a machine that acts in physical space. In robotic systems, an error is not a piece of information to be corrected: it has real consequences for people and the surrounding environment. That is why safety, reliability and human oversight are project requirements from the very first phase, not aspects to be checked further down the line.
A call for talent
A programme of this scope requires multidisciplinary expertise. Magellano Tech is keen to get in touch with robotics, mechatronics, computer and electronics engineers. We are also looking for professionals with experience in computer vision, control systems, ROS, embedded systems and functional safety.
The programme is also open to recent graduates and students who wish to train in this field. For them, the company intends to set up a dedicated training programme.
